My qualifications have good number of citations et.c. which show substantial intrinsic merit as required but that was for my past research projects rather than my current. Will this matter significantly in presenting my case as National in Scope.

As long as your past research projects are related in some way to your work in the field of biochemistry, then it should not matter that your current research projects do not have as many citations as your past research projects.
